Situated in the extreme west of the mighty Himalaya, Nanga Parbat (naked mountain) is the second highest peak of Pakistan. The first British expedition to Nanga Parbat was led by the A.F.Mummery in 1895 but for more then 50 years many climbers have been attempting to reach the top and finally in 1953 the famous Hermann Buhl, member of a joint Austrian - German expedition made the ascent.
In 1970 the Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner reached the top but lost his brother Gunther.
More then 40 climbers have lost their lives on the Nanga Parbat that is why it is also called as the Killer Mountain. Most of the expeditions have been using the Rupal face of the mountain as a climbing route but few of them have followed the Diamar face.
